BIO
Ron G. Crane was born and raised in Nampa, Idaho. He is a graduate of Nampa Christian High School and later
graduated from college with an Associate degree. He served as a member of the Idaho National Guard from
1971-1977, receiving recognition as Idaho's Soldier of the Year in 1975.
Subsequent to working in the banking industry for six years, Mr. Crane started his own successful business,
Crane Alarm Service, in 1979. Today, Crane Alarm is one of the oldest and largest family owned alarm
companies in Idaho and is currently managed and operated by his oldest son.
Prior to his election as State Treasurer in 1998, Mr. Crane served 16 years in the Idaho House of
Representatives. While there, he chaired the House State Affairs Committee for 4 years and the Business
Committee for 7 years. He also served as co-chair of the Interim Committee on Electrical Restructuring.
During his legislative service he received the Guardian of Small Business Award from the NFIB and the
Legislative Champion of the Family Award.
Ron was elected by his peers and currently serves as the president of the Western States Treasurer's
Association. He also serves on the executive committees of both the National Association of State Treasurers
and the National Association of State Auditors, Controllers, and Treasurers. He is a member of the Nampa and
Caldwell, Idaho Chambers of Commerce, was a founding board member of the Lifeline Crisis Pregnancy Center in
Nampa and also serves on the board of directors of Nampa Christian Schools.
Mr. Crane married his childhood sweetheart, Cheryl Seward and they have been married 37 years. They have
six children and 3 grandchildren.
DUTIES
As State Treasurer, Mr. Crane is responsible for management of both the state and local government investment
pools with a daily balance in excess of $2 billion dollars. He directs receipt of all state monies, the
accounting and disbursement of public funds, invests general account and pooled agency cash in government
securities, bank certificates of deposit, corporate bonds and commercial paper to produce significant new
non-tax revenue for the State of Idaho. He oversees issuance of instruments of state debt and pays all
warrants issued by the State Controller's Office. He directs the investments of the Idaho Millennium Fund,
the state's newest permanent endowment fund.
The State Treasurer is a member of the State Board of Canvassers, administrator of the Local Government
Investment Pool, custodian of the Idaho Public School Endowment Fund, custodian of Worker's Compensation security
deposits made by insurance companies, administrator of the Underground Storage Tank Upgrade Assistance Account and
the Idaho Prime Rate Loan program for small business - for which he received a national award from the U.S. Small
Business Administration for "innovative programs" which provide capital to small businesses in Idaho.
He serves as chairman of the Idaho Municipal Bond Bank and is an ex-officio advisor to the Idaho Housing and
Finance Association. He is also chairman of the Idaho College Savings Plan advisory board.
